#3. The 'two sides of the cake' - conception
two picture about the same cakes, but one is upside down.
Is it counts ?
in my opinion:
Yes, just as everything counts !
Then, which picture shows mostly the truth?
Two pictures above, taken about exactly the same cakes.
So thus, physically there was no difference between them.
But, the other way -as you see- the photos shows us two different pairs of cakes.
Two possible variations of the past.
The past of those two cakes, the past of myself, (who shared common room with them at that moment),
The past of the napkins under the cakes, and so on.
If i don't tell you, that there are the same cakes on the pictures, you cannot be sure of that.
Furthermore, you hardly can decide, which photo conists the more documentary-value.
Nevermind, it's not your fault.
Why?
Because the two photos are about two different kind of apects that i tried to document at the same time !
On the 1st (left one) i recorded the actual positions of the cakes, as i put them onto the table from their pack, when i not thinking on: "how to set them to make the most informative photo i can take of them".
On the 2nd photo (right one), i manipulated the original past (the represented past by the 1st photo), -but only for documenting that the cake has different sides. It's important.. I simply couldn't document it without manipulating the fact: the method, i used to put those two cakes on the table when i'm not thinking on to document the cakes on the best possible way. So it's a closed circe.
I know, this paradoxon just starts sounding like Heisenberg uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics. But please, it has at least as much connections to quantum mechanics as to our everyday life without any disciplines named or mentioned. (if it's true, that our world is operating by rules of quantum mechanics.)
That's what i truely believe in, the "everything counts" in other words, "everything coheres everything". That's really not an unsignificant parameter of the organic world, we living in. %)
To continue thinking about information in details, i give an example:
Let's play with the idea: What would happen if all the documentation and photo-material would destroy on the core of some war & disaster, for example. Only this piece of photo will remain (on some dusty server in a vault..maybe %) about this kind of cake product, the made in Hungary product named: "Pilóta keksz" (Pilot-cake). The whole past of this cake, which -once upon a time- satisfied millions of consumers, would drop off to one simple image. How would the rest of (survived) humanity remember this cake. Was it light or dark brown colored? Was it double-sided ? It only depends on how much information the photo-taker wanted to transmit. In this case, the creator of this picture (gosh, me?!) might bear the whole responsibility of the quality of image remained in the rest of humanity's collective mind about Pilóta-cake.
With this tale, I just wanted to picture the importance of planning what and how we document about the past, for the future. That's why i generally try to do my best at every documented piece.. %)
